How does an online master’s degree work in the UK?

An online master’s degree allows you to complete postgraduate study remotely rather than attending regular classes on campus. You study through a digital learning environment, using online materials, recorded teaching, independent research and structured assessment.

It is still a master’s degree. You’ll study at postgraduate level, develop subject knowledge, engage with academic research and complete assignments that match the course’s learning outcomes. The main difference is how you access teaching and organise your learning.

Online study can be useful if you are working, managing family commitments, living away from campus or simply need more flexibility than a conventional timetable provides.

Here, we’ll delve more into online learning at a master’s level so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you.

What does online teaching involve?

The experience depends on the programme, but online master’s study can include:

  • pre-recorded lectures and guided learning materials
  • reading and independent research
  • interactive activities and knowledge checks
  • discussion boards and collaborative group tasks
  • tutor-led sessions or webinars
  • feedback on assessments
  • online library and student-support services

Most online programmes feature asynchronous learning. This means you can complete a lot of the work at a time that suits you, while still following a defined module schedule and meeting deadlines.

Do you have to attend live classes?

Some online master’s include live sessions, such as tutorials, webinars, guest lectures or group activities.

If you work full-time, live in a different time zone, or have other commitments, clarify whether these sessions are essential, optional or recorded.

At Brunel, we know everyone’s circumstances are different, and so we design our online programmes with flexibility in mind.

How do universities assess online master’s degrees?

Assessment reflects the subject and learning outcomes, not simply the fact that you’re studying online.

Depending on the programme, you might complete:

  • essays and written reports
  • case-study analyses
  • research proposals
  • data-analysis tasks
  • presentations
  • group projects
  • reflective assignments
  • timed online tests
  • a dissertation or applied research project

For example, Brunel’s online MSc Artificial Intelligence includes coursework, conceptual and statistical modelling exercises, programming assignments, online tests and a dissertation. Brunel’s AI Strategy MSc uses individual and group assignments, consultancy-style reports, case analyses, presentations and an applied research project.

How much time does an online master’s take?

Online does not mean entirely self-paced. You’ll have modules, deadlines and a timetable for the academic year.

Many Brunel online master’s courses offer a one-year full-time route and a two-year part-time route. This equates to roughly 35–40 hours of study per week for full-time students and 15–20 hours for part-time students.

The right route depends on your circumstances. Part-time study is often more realistic if you are in full-time employment. Full-time study can be a strong option if you want to complete your qualification more quickly and can commit substantial time each week.

What support should online students expect?

Support is a key part of the decision. At Brunel, we have a dedicated student support team available 24/7 to help at any point during your studies.

How do you choose the right online master’s?

Start with the outcome you want. Are you looking to progress in your existing role, change career, gain a specialist qualification or prepare for further study?

Then consider:

  • the modules and learning outcomes
  • how the programme is delivered
  • the expected weekly study commitment
  • assessment methods
  • entry requirements
  • fees and funding
  • academic and student support
  • accreditation or professional recognition, where relevant
